Inside Supersonic Nural™ engineering
Before perfecting your Dyson Supersonic Nural™ styling technique, let’s take a look inside this innovative machine. This hair dryer has been engineered to dry and style hair with minimal heat to protect scalp health – which in turn maintains the quality of your hair. Where traditional hair dryers often have weaker air flow, and poor heat distribution, Dyson Supersonic Nural™ is lightweight, styles with precision, offers intelligent heat control to reduce scalp discomfort, and is powered by high velocity airflow for faster, targeted drying.
The Dyson Supersonic Nural™ is a culmination of Dyson’s pioneering hair care research and technology, enhanced by three in-built sensor functions:
-
Scalp protect
This distance sensor intuitively lowers heat as you move your machine closer to the hair, allowing for gentle, yet precise styling that minimises scalp heating.
-
Attachment learning
This sensor recognises which settings are required for optimal styling with each attachment, and instantly recalls the settings from the previous use.
-
Pause detect
Your Nural’s™ accelerometer alerts your machine whenever your device is put down. The Pause detect sensor will activate to reduce noise and conserve energy.
A healthy scalp equals healthy hair
Scalp health plays a pivotal role in the strength, texture and shine of your hair. The scalp’s microbiome is home to an ecosystem of beneficial bacteria that keeps the scalp skin healthy and balanced. If the microbiome becomes unbalanced or disrupted as result of excessive heat damage, it can strip the hair of essential moisture and lead to hair concerns like:
- Dandruff
- Excess oil
- Thinning hair
- Hair loss
- Post-partum hair loss
With this in mind, Dyson hair care engineers created the Supersonic Nural™ with Scalp protect mode to reduce scalp temperature exposure, minimise scalp discomfort and promote strong, healthy, shiny tresses during crucial follicle growth stages.
This feature can be activated with Nural™ attachments that apply concentrated heat to the scalp – the Gentle scalp or Styling concentrator . Styling with Scalp protect mode activated means your Nural™ will automatically reduce the temperature to maintain the optimal target temperature of 55°C. This allows you to perform gentle, precise drying while keeping heat off the scalp.
How to style hair with the Dyson Supersonic Nural™
The Dyson Supersonic Nural™ represents the convergence of twenty-five years of airflow innovation and ten years of hair care research. In the below step-by-step guide, Dyson experts share their hair styling insights so you can discover how to use the Dyson Supersonic Nural™ on a diverse range of hair textures with precisely engineered attachments.
1. Start with towel-dried hair
It’s important to start with towel-dried hair before styling. Since hair is more susceptible to damage when it is wet, towel-drying helps remove excess water before going in with your hair dryer2. We recommend using a non-abrasive towel (like microfibre) to gently dry the hair to avoid tangling.
2. Use the correct attachment for your hair type
You’ll find a range of Supersonic Nural™ attachments that complement your hair type to achieve your individual styling needs. For example, curly and wavy hair types will find the Wave+Curl Diffuser perfect for defining hair texture, amplifying volume at the root and minimising frizz. The Gentle air attachment is designed for fast drying of fine hair and sensitive scalps, and the Wide-tooth comb attachment helps shape and lengthen textured hair as it dries.
3. Choose your heat and speed settings
After you have fitted your preferred attachment, you’ll find that there are 3 airflow settings and 4 heat settings plus a cold shot feature. This allows you to set your desired air speed and temperature to suit your hair type and style.
If you want to learn how to use a Dyson hair dryer on fine hair, low heat and speed settings will keep the hair looking smooth. Using the Gentle air attachment with Scalp protect mode will safeguard sensitive scalps and finer hair textures against extreme heat application. On the other hand, high heat and speed settings will dry thicker, textured hair faster. The Nural’s™ Attachment learning sensor will streamline your drying routine since it retains your last-used styling settings.
4. Section hair and blow dry with brush
Whenever you style hair with a Dyson hair dryer, it’s essential to section the hair so you can evenly dry strands from roots to ends. We recommend using clips or hair ties to separate into 3 or more sections (depending how thick your hair is). Use the Dyson Vented Barrel brush alongside your Supersonic Nural™ to evenly distribute heat, and lift and smooth the hair as you dry.
5. Unlock the cold shot feature
After drying and styling a section of hair with your Supersonic Nural™, use the cold blast feature on the same section. Cold blast immediately deactivates the heat setting and brings the air temperature down to 28°C. This shot of cool air will help set your style for longer.
6. Let your hair type dictate your styling technique
The Dyson Supersonic Nural™ has been specifically engineered for a variety of hair types so you can style different hair textures with ease.
For an everyday blow-dry:
- Attach the Gentle air attachment to your machine and activate Scalp protect mode. Pre-dry towel-dried hair.
- Stick to medium heat and speed settings – though you can use a higher heat setting on thicker hair.
- Next, swap to the Styling concentrator for precision styling. Keep Scalp protect mode switched on.
- Switch to the Styling concentrator attachment (on medium settings) and use with your barrel brush to smooth and lift the hair at the root. You can keep Scalp protect mode on during this styling phase since you will be applying direct, precise heat.
- If you notice any further Flyaways, run over your strands with the Flyaway attachment.
For curly hair and defined waves:
- Run your desired styling product through towel-dried hair.
- Attach the Wave+Curl Diffuser to your machine. This attachment has a ‘Dome’ mode and ‘Diffuse’ mode.
- To preserve the natural texture of coily and curly hair and boost volume, use Diffuse mode. To define waves and curls, opt for Dome mode.
- Set to medium hair and airflow speed. You’ll find that the Wave+Curl Diffuser has enough heat distribution to prevent direct scalp contact.
- Flip your hair upside down and hold the top section from underneath and keep in place.
- You can repeat this motion on all sides of the hair.
- Once the hair is dry, flip back and shake out your curls or waves.
7. Clean your filter for optimal performance
Proper care and maintenance will help increase the longevity of your Supersonic Nural™ hair dryer and ensure it continues to perform at its best. We suggest regular filter cleaning once a month or when the three white LED lights flash continuously. Simply remove the magnetic filter cage and wash in warm soapy water. Let it soak for 30 minutes, rinse and dry. For the actual filter, wipe down with a clean cloth to remove trapped debris.
