Diagnosing your hair type

  • Hair diagnosing tool

  • Shape is differentiated by four types: Straight (Type 1), Wavy (Type 2), Curly (Type 3), and Coily (Type 4). These types also include subsections using “A, B, C” to help diagnose your exact hair type, from Type 1A to Type 4C.

On the other axis we have Texture: Fine, Medium, and Coarse. Now, the reality is you can have Type 4C Coily hair but have fine hair texture. Hair is as unique as we are, so take a moment to try and find where your hair sits on the chart.

The ‘bob’ is an iconic look that has been sported over the years by stylish super-mums including Marion Cotillard and Victoria Beckham. While the original “bob” style was invented by Parisian hairdresser Antoine de Paris in 1909, this look is ideal for the on-the-go mum seeking a strong and stylish look in a short amount of time.

How to style the French Bob:

    1. After washing hair, towel dry and apply a wave spray or sea salt spray.
    2. Position the fringe and parting into the desired position.
    3. Go in with the Dyson SupersonicTM hair dryer with diffuser attachment on low heat and medium speed.
    4. Scrunch a section of the hair into the diffuser and hold in place until dry. Avoid the temptation to move the dryer or disturb the hair being styled. This will contribute to unwanted frizz and flyaways. Repeat around the head until all hair has been dried in the diffuser. Note that the Dyson SupersonicTM hair dryer measures the temperature of the airflow 40 times a second, preventing extreme heat damage and protecting the hair’s natural shine.
    5. Finish with a spritz of texture spray to add movement and achieve the “second day of style” feel.

The Low Ponytail

The low ponytail requires little maintenance but looks sophisticated. Busy mothers are often balancing multiple tasks, meaning a practical look is essential. Celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé have opted for this look in the past, as it offers both practicality and style for mums with calendars full to the brim.

How to style the Low Ponytail:

    1. After washing, part hair into four sections with a middle parting. Apply your favourite moisturising product to the first section of hair.
    2. Pick up the Dyson SupersonicTM hair dryer and add the wide tooth comb attachment. Place the heat setting on 3 and the speed setting on 3 At its top speed, the Dyson SupersonicTM hair dryer can push out 13 litres of air a second.
    3. Begin to detangle and dry the first section using the wide tooth comb attachment by starting from the ends working your way up to the roots. Please note that the wide tooth comb attachment has been engineered specifically with type 4 hair in mind, for other types, you might want to opt for the smoothing nozzle attachment instead.
    4. Once the first section is dry, repeat throughout the whole head on the other three sections. Remember to use a water spray to keep hair moist as you go.
    5. Once the entire hair is completely dry, run through the hair once more using the cold shot feature on the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. The cold shot function allows the hair to set in the style created as it cools, holding the style in place for longer.
    6. Apply a gel to the roots of your hair and comb into a low ponytail. Secure the ponytail with a hair tie just above the neck and apply a light shine spray to finish the look.

The Retro Shag Cut

Achieved with the Dyson AirwrapTM hair styler

Tagged as being a major trend for 2021, this popular 70’s style is making a comeback. From Jennifer Hudson to Halle Berry, we’ve seen plenty of shag cut hairstyles over the years. While the trend was made famous by male celebrities such as David Bowie and Mick Jagger, it was barber Paul McGregor who created the cut for the American actress, mother and Academy Award winner Jane Fonda. A modern alternative to this look was also worn by South Korean actress Kim Tae-Hee.

How to style the Retro Shag Cut:

After washing the hair, apply a holding cream.

    1. Pick up the Dyson AirwrapTM styler and attach the pre-styling hair dryer head. Turn the settings to medium heat and medium airflow, and dry the hair until it is almost dry.
    2. Section hair into manageable sections for styling. Attach the 30mm barrel with the arrows facing away from the face onto the Dyson AirwrapTM styler. Whilst using this attachment, turn the settings to high heat and high airflow.
    3. Take a piece of hair from the first section and wrap it around the barrel holding onto the ends of the hair.
    4. Hold the hair there on the barrel for 15 seconds or until the hair is dry, then set the curl with the cold shot button for 5–10 seconds, then release. The Dyson AirwrapTM styler works by using an aerodynamic phenomenon called the Coanda effect. It curves air to attract and wrap hair around the barrel, styling with air and not extreme heat.
    5. Repeat throughout the hair on all sections. For a more natural look, you can alternate between the barrels with different curl directions as you go.
    6. Once all hair sections are complete, gently loosen the curls by brushing hair through with fingers and use a texture spray to create a textured finish.

Natural curls

To stretch out natural curls and achieve that coveted blowout look, a hair dryer works best. Air Multiplier™ technology in the Supersonic™ produces a powerful jet of controlled air. This supports fast drying – allowing you to transform a simple hairstyle into something elevated.

How to style The Natural Curl:

    1. Apply leave-in conditioner to wet hair and gently tease out any tangles with a wide tooth comb before separating into sections.
    2. With the tools and accessories, begin to stretch and loosen hair whilst drying.
    3. Once you’ve reached the top section, stretch hair forward to avoid flattening the shape.
    4. When hair is fully dry, use a wide tooth comb to create face framing layers – long hair may take a little more time.

The Face Framing Layers

Achieved with the Dyson CorraleTM hair straightener

This timeless look has been worn by many women ranging from Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor, Chinese actress Yang Mi to vice-president Kamala Harris. While it's simple to recreate, it still retains the same impact as it did in the 90s and might just be the most effective time-saving style on our list for multi-tasking mothers out there.

How to style Face Framing Layers:

    1. After drying your hair, position parting just off centre and brush out any tangles.
    2. Section hair into manageable styling sections.
    3. Turn the Dyson CorraleTM straightener onto the desired heat setting. Wait for the chime signalling it is at the selected temperature and ready to use.
    4. On the first section of hair, run the Dyson CorraleTM straightener from the roots of the hair to the ends at an even pace. By gathering hair, the flexing copper plates of the Dyson CorraleTM straightener is able to achieve the same style with less heat. This reduces frizz and flyaways, therefore enhancing style.
    5. When reaching towards the ends of the hair, turn the plates inwards towards your face to create soft bends in the hair.
    6. Repeat around the head on every section until complete.
    7. Add a hair spray to finish and hold the look in place.

This iconic 70s style is making a big comeback, thanks to its celebration of natural texture. To customise this into a range of easy hairstyles, use any of the Airwrap’s variety of accessories. Instead of extreme heat, the Airwrap™ works by curving air towards it – perfectly setting hairstyles for face framing. It does this by using a phenomenon called the Coanda effect.

    How to style Bedhead Waves:

    1. Apply a holding cream to wet hair.
    2. Use the Pre-styling dryer attachment set to medium heat and medium airflow until hair is almost dry.
    3. Attach the 30mm barrel with arrows facing away from your face. Section hair and then begin to curl pieces of each section, keeping settings at high heat and high airflow.
    4. After 15 seconds set each curl with the cold shot button before releasing.
    5. Once each section is complete, brush hair to loosen the curls.
