Removing pet hair in the home
Pets cause mess around the home – but the most impactful on our health is the hair that they shed. Once animal hair grows to a certain length it falls, resulting in continuous shedding. Removing pet hair is important, but it can be tricky to stay on top of.
Pet hair embeds itself ‘electrostatically’ to hard floors and carpeted surfaces. If left, pet allergens and the microscopic life that accompanies pet hair can trigger allergies and impair air quality and the health of homes.
Conventional vacuums may struggle to remove the smaller particles in pet hair, but the engineering involved in each of Dyson’s vacuums make them an ideal pet hair vacuum. Pioneering detection and filtration technology, alongside targeted tools like the Stubborn dirt brush make vacuuming pet hair seamless, every time.

What is pet dander?
-
Pet food and dirt brought in from outside is visible to us, but other forms of mess are undetectable and therefore harder to remove. The microscopic life that accompanies pet dander can inhabit a range of areas in the home and when left to build-up, impact the health quality of homes.
Invisible to the naked eye, pet dander is made up of tiny skin particles that are shed by pets onto surfaces. Once these microscopic particles become airborne, dust mites and skin flakes containing pet allergens can be inhaled, triggering allergies. Pet dander builds up on soft furnishings like mattresses, carpets and upholstery.
How to remove pet hair from the home
Vacuuming pet hair is key to healthy homes, but it’s not the only step needed for removing pet hair and allergens effectively. To ensure your home is safe as well as clean, follow these tips.
- Groom pets regularly
- Wash pet blankets at a high heat
- Clean dust from top to bottom
- Vacuum upholstery and carpets often and slowly
As hair growth reaches the catagen phase, pets shed particles and strands continuously. Grooming your pets frequently will decrease the amount of shedding in the home. Dog breeds like German Shepherds, Collies and Samoyeds are especially prone to hair shedding and need regular brushing. Our pet hair remover brush, the pet Groom tool* vacuum accessory uses suction to brush pet hair and remove dead skin cells, dander and loose strands.
*Only compatible with the Dyson corded vacuum rangePet blankets, cushions and beds are breeding grounds for the dust mites that feed of pet dander. Washing them at high heats (around 60 degrees Celsius) will help to remove dander and break down pet allergens. The Hair screw tool can be used on soft furnishings and is ideal for vacuuming pet hair off blankets and beds before washing.
Pet hair and microscopic particles are shed wherever pets go. To capture and remove pet hair effectively, clean higher surfaces first and finish below to catch any fallen dander.
Suction can’t remove dog hair alone – agitation is also required. The powerful airflow and brush bar included in Dyson’s vacuums work together to lift pet hair from carpeted or hard surfaces. When vacuuming pet hair, alternate directions to pick up more embedded hair.
Dyson pet hair technology
To combat pet hair and the risk they pose to healthy spaces, our engineers recreate conditions of real homes in the Dyson Pick-Up Laboratory.
To understand how to get rid of dog hair fully, we test our technology on dust and dander from real homes. As Senior Mechanical Engineer James McCrea states, “When we design vacuum cleaners, we test with dust from real homes and not just industry standard material, because we know that organic matter like pet hair and dander is often caught up in household dust and will have a big impact on how the machine functions”.
As a result of this research, we’ve developed suction power and filtration systems powerful enough to lift and remove pet hair completely. To find the latest technology in vacuum cleaners for dog and cat hair as well as other pets, select from our advanced cordless stick vacuums.
Dyson V15 Detect™
Our latest in engineering, the Dyson V15 Detect™ reveals and counts particles as you clean1
.The laser detection feature shows you the particles on hard floors2 that you can’t see on your own. Microscopic particles, allergens and dust mites that attach themselves to pet hair are undetectable to the naked eye. Using green light technology, the laser demonstrates where dust and pet dander has built up.
As higher volumes of dust and pet hair are identified, suction is automatically increased through the powerful Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor3. While vacuuming pet hair, the anti-tangle comb clears hair from the brush bar to protect against loss of suction.

Dyson Omni-glide™
Pet dander and hair can get stuck in hard-to reach areas. The Dyson Omni-glide™ is our slimmest and most manoeuvrable hard-floor vacuum yet4. An articulating neck and narrow cleaner head allow the vacuum to float around corners, obstacles and into tight spaces5.
The aligned format of the Omni-glide™ allows it to lie flat and remove pet hair from tight and out-of-view spaces. Once captured, pet dander and the microscopic particles attached are completely sealed in through five-stage filtration6
.To manage continuous shedding, the Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor maintains powerful suction with every use – allowing you to remove pet hair regularly and ensure a clean and safe home.
